The twins left East Potomac Park to begin working at the Annapolis Roads Club, which then encompassed a 9-hole golf course and a beach club. In 1941 they leased, and later purchased, the Club from the Munsey Trust Company. Business was booming when World War II interrupted. Ray and Roy enlisted in the U. S. Army Air Corps in January of 1942. In 1945, they returned to Annapolis Roads Club to find the property vandalized and the course overgrown with weeds. They worked diligently to restore the facility to its prior condition. Their older brother, Bob, helped with rehabilitating the course.
ln1950, the twins leased the 9-hole White Flint Golf Course, which was located on Rockville Pike where the up-scale White Flint Shopping Center sits today. Here they began a series of promotions, which had a great deal to do with stimulating golf in the Metropolitan area. Ben Hogan and Sam Snead both played exhibitions at White Flint in the 1950's.
In 1958 Ray and Roy purchased Glenn Dale Golf Club located in Glenn Dale, MD. The course was in run-down condition and was in need of significant renovation. They began transforming the course and facilities into the attractive, successful golf club it is today.
It was in 1968, after they sold the Annapolis Roads Club, that the idea was conceived to build their own golf course. They acquired nearly 300 acres of tobacco farmland in Calvert County, MD. Ray got busy designing the layout and with several bulldozers and one pan they had the course open and playable in 15 months. Their brother, Bob, was again most helpful, offering much encouragement and making many good suggestions along the way. There were no architect plans for the course - it was built by sight only. It was a natural to
call it Twin Shields - since the course represented Ray and Roy's finest effort and the realization of a long-held dream.
Ray passed away in 1980. His three children continue to run Glenn Dale today.
Roy died in March 1998. His daughters now oversee operations at Twin Shields, with excellent assistance from John Dodson - Head Golf Pro, Jim Halley - Head Superintendent, his assistant Gary Harshman, and their staff.
Twin Shields celebrated its 36th Anniversary in May, 2005, and we are now celebrating our 37th. Ray and Roy would have been most proud of the condition of the course and grounds. Twin Shields truly is a "little corner of Heaven" in Calvert County. We hope you'll come and see for yourself!
